Long before suburban development arrived, the area was home to the small service villages of Dixie and Burnhamthorpe, centred respectively around Dundas Street and Cawthra Road, and Burnhamthorpe Road and Dixie Road. Both villages served the surrounding farms and apple orchards that gave the area its name — a name still carried by the Applewood community today.
Modern Applewood took shape in 1955, when developer Harold Shipp purchased land on the south side of the QEW and began building what would become Applewood Acres — ultimately 733 homes, complete with their own school, park, church, and shopping plaza. Today, the broader Applewood district is divided into Applewood Acres south of Queensway, and Applewood Heights and Applewood Hills north of Dundas Street, separated by an industrial park along the Dixie corridor.
