Originally settled in 1821 as "Gardner's Clearing" at what is now the intersection of Britannia Road and Hurontario Street, the community took the name Britannia when its first post office opened in 1863. While much of the original village has been absorbed into the surrounding modern neighbourhoods, several historic landmarks survive, including the 1843 church at the southeast corner of Britannia Road and Hurontario Street and the restored Old Britannia Schoolhouse, built in 1852.
Today, "Britannia" most commonly refers to the Britannia Road corridor running east-west across Mississauga — connecting communities including Streetsville, Meadowvale, East Credit, and the Britannia East Business Park, an important employment hub for the surrounding area.
